Sale of Nigerians In Libya, A Slap On Our Face – Senate

The Senate has begun the investigation of the alleged sale of African migrants “mostly Nigerians” as slaves in Libya, which it described as a slap on the face of Nigeria.

The probe was based on a motion moved by Senator Baba Kaka Garbai at the plenary on Wednesday, entitled, ‘Urgent Need to Protect Nigerian Citizens from the Libya Slavery Auction.’

Senate president Bukola Saraki said there was the need for Nigeria to do more to protect its citizens.

He said, “As a country, truly, it is a slap on the face of all of us if Nigerians can be treated in this manner. Like somebody said, Ivory Coast that is not as big as us is taking action to see how they can bring their own citizens back. We need to be doing similar things.”

The lawmakers unanimously granted prayers of the motion, including to “condemn in totality the current depravity and sheer animalism being exhibited by these Libyans selling fellow Africans as slaves.”

They also urged the Federal Government to urgently investigate how many Nigerians were affected by the slave sales.

The lawmakers also urged the Federal Government to urgently commence the process of repatriation and rehabilitation of Nigerian citizens “caught up in these despicable treatment and human rights abuses.”

  3. Don't mind them, bunch of criminals. Samuel Eto of Cameroon is an international footballer, he chattered plane to repatriate 10,000 of his people back home. Saraki you have just said this for saying sake not that any action will be taken, is just a means of journalists to sell their papers. Is a slap on your face, come and see how Nigerian consulate treat Nigerians in South Africa if we are not slaves to our government. Is only God that will destroy those who destroyed Nigeria in Jesus Christ name I pray AMEN

  4. Its not only a slap on ur face...it will soon be a bone in ur throat...becos the problem is caused by the political elite. Take for example the NPA neglecting 536 of its own staff(youths) for 10yrs now and still counting without salary not that they were officially saked or anything like that all happening in this country...the case was even brought befor the national assembly Bt uptill now nothing has been done and these youth continue to suffer...WHY!!! some of them had to survive and fend for their families...hence they make such risky trips....wot a country!!
