Fulani Cow Men and The Grazing Bill Saga

Here's OluFamous.Com take on this controversial issue:
Many of us hate the Fulani herdsmen because their Cows damage our peoples' farm crops, others hate them just because the leader of our country, President Muhammadu Buhari, is a Fulani man.

What such people forget is that Fulani herdsmen have been fighting and killing people who try to steal or kill their Cows for many years, even before we returned to democracy in 1999. It has nothing to do with President Buhari being a Fulani man, but he is now trying to look for a real solution.

What is the solution? All lands belong to government. They can come to your land today and say they want to use it for public good and pay you compensation. This happens everyday.

So, what is wrong if government build ranches for Herdsmen so that their Cows will stop damaging peoples' farm crops? If you insist that Herdsmen must go and build ranches by themselves, the cost of MEAT will increase and many poor Nigerians won't be able to afford to eat meat. Let's stop the hate.

Government go to Niger Delta and take over peoples family land because of Crude Oil and you are enjoying the money in a state without oil; so why are you shouting against Grazing fields for Cows?

I'm not saying Fulani herdsmen are angels, they have their problems and excesses. That is why they must be kept in a place where government has control over and can monitor their activities. If you think about this matter without bias and hatred for Fulani, you will see that this is a good solution.

With this, government can also monitor how their Cows are treated medically, so we wont eat bad meat.

Checks have confirmed that the National Grazing Bill is alive. In fact, there are two of them and the House of Representatives had initiated moves to consolidate both bills. Senate should follow.

Don't allow your hatred for Fulani becloud your reasoning. Fulani Herdsmen attack and kill because they roam freely, so lets put them in a place where their activities would be monitored. My two cents!

  2. Dear Olu Famous, how come you miss a good opportunity to open a dispassionate discuss. To put the records straight, I do not think there is hatred against Fulani herdsmen. What has happened is that farmers oppose a situation where their efforts is consumed in a bid to feed cows. Again, herding cow is a private business like any other business and so government has no business meddling here. If the price of meat goes up so be it. No one canvassed for subsidized meat, infact as you must know the price of any commodity is governed by the forces of supply and demand and so your take on subsidized meat is flawed. One would have thought that you will address the dangerous possession of arms by this untrained men and also help to unravel who funds their acquisition of the arms. Olu famous you missed it completely and I suggest that you try to be dispassionate you you dabble into national discuss of this nature in future. My one cent.

  4. I see your point Mr Olu but a country that has no regard for the rule of law will only be bias in the execution of the so called laws. Don't be surprised to find out that only lands that belongs to the poor will be taken over. #fingerscrossed

Problems identified is half solved, if government can checkmate the herdsmen excesses &proffer solutions that would go a long way in settling unnecessary dispute that usually arises.

  13. Chief when did it become the responsibility of the federal government to provide free Capital for private businesses or do the cattle belong to Nigeria as a nation? because i don't understand this your line of argument. Did you hear that when these cattle are sold their proceeds are paid in to the federation account. why don't government help the businessmen by paying for his warehouses so their goods will not be expensive why don't the government buy lands for the farmers? why can't the government also pay for shops for traders so they can do their private business? why don't government provide land for private transport companies to build their bus terminals? I can go on and on but I am sure you understand what I am saying by now which is that the cattle are privately owned.

  14. Dear Olu, i stand with you, that is the right thing to do stop them from migrating from one place to other it will also restrict them and their cows from peoples farm. we really need both farmers and herdsmen to grow our economy.

  15. First off, my dearest Olu, government is not providing ranches but grazing reserves. A grazing reserve is a wide expanse of land that isn't necessarily fenced in. A ranch is fenced in and contains holding pens for the cows. Whereas a grazing reserve may stretch for hectares, a ranch can be accomodated within a couple of acres.

The difference here is that thousands of cattle can rest within a reserve and perhaps as much numbers for herdsmen, grooms and their families. What is being advocated is a settlement of sorts within which a way of life adverse to that of the indigenous community or foreign to their way of life will be incorporated.

Grazing reserves are a recipe for disaster as the indigenous way of life is certain to clash with the foreign one. To put it another way, grazing reserves are nothing but the forceful occupation of indigenous lands by Fulani herdsmen dictated by a government in blantant disregard for an indigenous people's welfare and safety. It's a conduct most strange to all forms of democracy.
