Just One Civil Servant Takes 20 Salaries, BVN Exposed Them – Finance Minister

The outcry over the menace of ghost worker fraud reverberated when the finance minister, Kemi Adeosun, threw a bombshell by revealing that, with the help of the Biometric Verification Number (BVN) policy, it has been discovered that just one civil servant alone collected 20 salaries every month.

She has also declared that those behind the 23,000 ghost workers discovered in the Federal Civil Service payroll would be handed over to EFCC for prosecution. No more go and sin no more.

The adoption of BVN in processing salary payments by the federal government had stunningly thrown up no fewer than 23,000 ghost names on its payroll, a development that raised concerns about the huge amount of monies that may have been stolen from the nation’s coffers through such leakages in the federal civil service.

“What the IPPIS-BVN registration has shown us has been a real revelation. We have identified that there are people who appear on our payroll multiple times. BVN links all the accounts of that person, so we are seeing in our payroll 20 names to one BVN number,” Adeosun said.

Ghost worker syndrome is one of the many ways top civil servants have been stealing our money.

    1. There no more hiding place with BVN now in place.those who have been living above their legitimate means can now be sorted out. Withdrawing and spending so much in excess of your income. Drug barons can now be easilly identified.

    1. Should be extended to checking total amount of money some individuals have been cashing in excess of their income. It's a great innobation. Sort out those who have been cashing heavy sums of money on daily wthout any evidence of genuine invome that includes drug pushers.

  24. Corruption everywhere. Legislature, Executive, Judiciary, Private sector, Religious circles, Associations, Clubs, MD's, etc. Civil service is especially culpable as they know how to manipulate the records and advise political office holders on how to perpetrate corruption and other evil deeds. May God help us.

  32. All the efforts to sanitize the system will never work until the judiciary is reshuffled and rid of the bad eggs. Those charged have the stolen money to hire corrupt SANS to defend them and to bribe corrupt judges and justices to acquit them. EFCC should beam their searchlight on the judiciary and investigate those of them living above their legitimate income. Again if all the SIM cards can be registered just like the BVN, kidnappers can easily be tracked especially if Nigeria can introduce Global positioning system(GPS)which can tell the law enforcement where the caller demanding a ransom is situated. May God grant us the grace and long life to see the result of this change we have always prayed for.
